The Financial Benefits of Lighting Upgrades

Take advantage of Xcel Energy rebates and Federal Tax deductions

By increasing lighting efficiency, you can reduce your lighting energy costs while maintining or potentially improving lighting quality. Retrofit lighting solutions are one of the easiest, most
profitable return on investments you can make, typically 35-40%. Now you can receive a tax deduction for installing energy efficient lighting systems, up to $0.60 per square foot.

Replace Incandescent Lighting with Compact Flourescents:
Lamps could be replaced with equivalent compact flourescent lamps that would put out the same amount of light while using up to 65% less energy and last up to 10 times longer. Up to 10 years.

Replace High Intensity Discharge Lighting With Flourescent Lighting:
Changing to fluorescent lighting would provide a substantial energy savings, up to 70% over HID lighting. Also during low use periods motion detectors can be used to dim the lights and then increase the light when an occupant is sensed, increasing the energy savings even more.

Install Occupancy Sensors in Offices:

According to the Advanced Lighting Guidelines, occupancy sensors in private offices can produce up to 45% energy savings.
Installing occupancy sensors in restrooms, conference rooms, and storage rooms would ensure that lights would be
off when spaces are not occupied. This not only saves energy, it extends re-lamping intervals.

Carbon Monoxide Control of Garage Exhaust Fans:
If they currently run 24/7, carbon monoxide sensors could be installed throughout the parking garage to turn the fans on only when the CO sensor in that area is registering above a predetermined level. Similar installations resulted in fan run times reduced by 85% and also extended motor life and reduced fan motor maintenance.

Solar Energy:
Photovoltaic systems are quiet, and produce clean energy with no emissions. Installing one kilowatt of solar power is the equivalent of planting 50 trees: Each kilowatt-hour generated by solar energy instead of fossil fuel saves 1,911 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year, and six pounds of nitrogen emissions.

Upgrading the energy efficiency of lamps, ballasts and fixtures can cut energy costs up to 70%.

Starting Point
Losaw Electric can give you a low or no-cost (and no obligation) ballpark estimate of the savings you could accrue by
upgrading your facility''s lighting with more energy-efficient technologies.

Decide How to Finance the Upgrade
A wide variety of financing options are available to fund an upgrade and often do not rely on an up-front cash outlay by
the facility. Upgrade-related loans and leases are other options. And there are government-sponsored tax deductions for
qualifying upgrades.

Reap the Benefits
Thousands of other companies who have undertaken upgrades can verify that the savings are real and ongoing. Facilities that have undertaken upgrades can also bask in the knowledge that they have contributed positively to the environment as well as enhanced facility ambience. Could your facility space and bottom line benefit from a lighting upgrade? Take the low-risk step of having a preliminary audit in your facility and find out. The magnitude of the opportunity may surprise you!

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting represents 40% of the average commercial building's electric bill.

Lighting provides the highest return on investment and is generally considered the easiest, most profitable investment in energy-saving building systems. According to the Energy Cost Savings Council, energy-efficient lighting generates an average project payback period of 2.2 years and a 45% return on investment.

It is estimated that 90% of all domestic commercial buildings were built before 1986, long before the time when today's energy efficient products were available.

Of these, only 20% have received lighting upgrades since they were built. These older lighting systems can consume up to 50% of the total energy expenditures in these buildings.
(Source: Lighting Controls Association, 2002) Every watt counts.

For every kilowatt-hour of energy we save, up to 1.44 pounds of CO2 may be prevented from entering the atmosphere. A single fixture upgrade that saves 315 kWh per year could reduce CO2 emissions by 44.1 pounds, which is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by nearly 50 trees.
